Muzzy ZX12 exhaust system (as of Jan 1, 2002):
Must use some sort of aftermarket EFI mapping device with this system. With
this exhaust, the lowend mapping is extremely important to dial in - otherwise,
low rpm, as in "in-town driving" is poor.
Properly tuned, the Muzzy delivers very good power - better than many others.
The 4 gas EC997 dynamometer systems are the
preferred method
of tuning - as they can tune by engine smoothness - in addition to realtime
HP and torque readouts.
Tuning an aftermarket FI "modifier" box on a dyno using an O2 (oxygen) sensor to
guess at an "A/F Ratio" is totally misleading - not uncommonly resulting in
FI settings that can be 3 to 6 True HP less than potential best power. That especially
includes "autotuned" power commanders. I just talked to a guy who spent 3 hours
"autotuning" his racebike - only to have it still have problems at high rpm/part
throttle (as in entering a corner / maintaining speed on racetrack).
Heck, in 3 hours, we could have properly tuned both fuel and ignition maps for best
power AND smoothness manually!
Best to tune for power - not a fictitious "A/F Ratio"...........
If you hear someone say that "It didn't make any more power, but it's got a better
fuel curve." Run away fast! That makes no sense - if the fuel rate was better -
it would make more power.
Gee - am I the only one who knows that???? I hope not!

Power Commander 3 and 3r and autotuning:
Oddly, (in direct clash with "autotuning salespeoples' claims) when measured
under load, it is starting to be a trend that, even with the same fuel delivery
rate - i.e. with pc map = zero map, the power output above 7k/100% throttle seems
to degrade WITH the pc3 simply installed and that "autotuning" isn't tuning for
optimum power....
Hmmm.....
One bike (Keith H. ~01/01/02), auto "tuned" in Florida by a "Power Commander Center",
went from 150.3 peak to 156.6 peak when properly tuned for power
- not, as it was - autotuned by residual oxygen values in the exhaust.
Retuned the pc3 for realtime power. Gained over 6 True HP at peak. Interesting.
Yet, just another bad showing for o2 based autotuning schemes.
But a lot of us tuners already knew that residual exhaust oxygen tuning was not
very optimal for power.
The other zx12 (Lawrence P. - 02/09/02), with a pc3r starting with the installed
"zero" map maxed out at 138.4 True HP - after adjusting fuel for best power.
Removed the pc3. Peak power jumped up to 145.7 True HP with no fuel changes.
The simple installation of the pc3 with a power optimized fuel map lost 5-6
over a stock, unmapped ECU?
Looks like something's wrong. And it ain't the EC997 dyno! They read the same every
day.
Oh my, oh my, whatever will they do when they show that their optimum "A/F Ratio"
does not equal best power or best 1/4 mile?????
Stay tuned.
TEKA EMS and the EC997 dynos will not have those pc3 and auto "tuning" scheme
problems.

The extension of the laboratory
for engines of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology was completed
in about 1935. Its architect was Rudolf Otto Salvisberg (1882-1940).
He had a successful career in Berlin but returned to Switzerland after
the advent of the Nazis. His architectural style was somewhat similar
to that of Erich Mendelsohn. The staircase of the laboratory is in normal
